Luxembourg’s attractive work-life balance

With a high minimum wage, ample days off or a generous maternity leave, Luxembourg employees have the best work-life balance, according to a new European work-life index.

According to a new study by Remote, an international human resources platform, Luxembourg has earned the top spot in their 2023 “European Life-Work Balance Index”. Luxembourg received an index score of 85.26 out of 100, followed by Spain (78.63) and France (77.19).  

Traditionally referred to as “work-life balance”, Remote has coined the term “life-work balance” as a greater number of people increasingly put their personal life over their work/career life. Remote stated, “The European continent is fast becoming a place that puts life before work: a truly healthy and productive balance.”.

Scoring work-life balance

The importance of work-life balance is gaining momentum as employees try to manage their professional and personal commitments. To assess and create the index, Remote factored in 8 key indicators. These are:

Luxembourg offers the best work-life balance

Luxembourg’s first place ranking is due to scoring well across all key metrics, particularly regarding statutory maternity leave (100% of the employee’s wage for 20 weeks) and statutory annual leave (26 days + 11 public holidays).

Additionally, Luxembourg received high scores for its high hourly minimum wage of €14.86 (ranked globally in the top 5) as well as its happiness score of 7.4, making Luxembourg one of the most content nations in Europe (ranked globally in the top 10).
